There've been several posts in multiple topics that explain exactly why people don't like seeing fanfiction/sequels centering around Aladdin and Jasmine's (or anyone's) kids. In a nutshell, people are tired of... -Kewler, hipper version of Mom/Dad reliving Mom/Dad's adventures. (Or a completely canned-plot adventure.) -Mom/Dad suddenly turning into washed-up old fogies while junior goes out and gets into trouble. (While Mom and Dad Just Don't Understand, usually.) Fanfictions/sequels about children could be done well. It's just that it doesn't seem to happen very often.
I, for example, don't have much of the Genie in my fic ( sorry, AG and TEC! Might include him later!) because his personality, for me anyway, is the hardest to write. The characters I'm best at writing about are Al and Jas, so I try to focus on them. While Genie is one of my favorite characters, I'd rather have him play a small part in the story and stay in characer than play a huge part and ruin his personality, that element that makes Genie who he is.
You could always get someone to check or help what you write, but if you think you're going to ruin him then keep it small because you're right--people who try to make him a big part and all 'omgx!1 funniez1!!' ends up butchering him.

Thanks for mentioning (and praising) my fic, DD! I really appreciate it! Plus, you've asked a question that's been bothering me since I first started writing this.
I think fics about Al and Jas' kids have great potential to be good stories, and I always read them with an open mind. I try to read ALL the different types of fanfiction, really.
If any of you do read my fic (part one is in my siggy) please try to read it with an open mind, and remember that it is my very first fic that I ever wrote!
Also, in response to one of the previous posts, since there are so many characters and storylines you can use in Aladdin fanfics, I don't mind if some canon characters are cut from the story, as long as they're not

No probs
Also I agree with u on ur points. I now what u mean about genie, I love him but he can be a bit hard cause he is so animated (pardon the pun) that he's difficult to make a main part of the story. I tend to have him but keep in him a small part too.
I'm also the AlJas type of writer! of course u know that...

Ha, of course that's fun.
Too bad I never got a chance to do so. No one other than the true RPers knew who the hell Eden was. D=

Heck, it's the only time I've seen an RP go THAT bad. It was horrible. I still cry at night. ;_;
One of my sisters used to play Vash in a Trigun RPG (not sure if you know the series...) but there were a ton of Mary Sues all throwing themselves at her character. She had a lot of fun blowing them all off while trying to stay in character.

I remember that RP! I was in the other one going on at the time.
We had some people a bit like that, although it wasn't quite as bad as what you're describing.

Ha... s'alright, AF92
Anyway, since everything's already been said, I don't want to be all redundant so I'll just rant.
There was this one RPG I joined a long time ago (The Genie hosted it. Damn, that guy was so cool.) And then she had to join in. -shudders-
This person had a fan character, unlike mine. There weren't many people in this group. Only the main characters, and my own fan character since the canons I wanted were mostly taken. The Genie didn't like Aladdin fan characters since most of them he had encountered where Mary-Sues, but he accepted mine, saying she was cool, a very well-developed one. Anyway, her character had an American name, so far-out it didn't fit in with the rest of us or the movie at all. She was Aladdin and Jasmine's teenaged daughter. A replica of Jasmine, that went through Jasmine's exact story. Her character snuck out of the palace and was in love with a streetrat with an equal American name.
Nothing new in this character, just... everything you hate mixed into one.
And this is where I start talking about the person who RPed her.
She wanted EVERYONE to listen to her. She wanted to be the center of attention. Everytime we turned away from her little 'love story with the streetrat', she'd tried so hard to get us back to that. Half the time, Genie was stuck babysitting her. It was hilarious. He got so ticked off by her, yet he'd stay in character. She was a Mary-Sue. AUGH! Poetic terms to describe herself, trying to make all guys fall in love with her, pretend she knew everything, and sometimes even dissed my character. And, since, my character's an eleven year old... took an advantage over her. My character started crying at some point, so the Genie took a stand for us all, and banned her. We were all, "Yay!" And since he was the only actual guy at the RP, he kept joking around about it 'being a man's job'. The gals were all femenists somewhat and tried beating the hell out of him in a friendly way.
-cries-
Why did that RP have to die?!
-stops-
Oh yes, we kept on getting n00bs and spammers, so GinGin closed it down not wanting to deal with anyone anymore. I still keep contact with him, though. I was his 'Special EdEd'. That's what he called Eden, whenever she called Genie 'GinGin'.

You mean, "their daughter comes back from the future"? Actually, that happened in the first fic I just recced, but it works, really.
I don't think that author ever saw Sailor Moon.
I second that; "The Life of Mine..." was the first fanfic I ever read, and it's one that I do go back and reread. It's so well thought out and not candy-coated.

My reasons for not really liking those fics are similar to what's already been said. I think it's annoying that the child is often the main character. I read fanfiction to see the new adverntures of canon characters, not some usually annoying original character.
Besides, most of these stories are about Aladdin and Jasmine's teenage daughter. I'm getting really sick of that. What I'd like to see is a fic about them having a seven-year-old son who acts like normal kids do and does NOT tag along to their adventures. I can't stand fics about the kid disobeying everyone and then saving the day (think of Jade in Jackie Chan Adventures and you know what I mean).
Ummm...Al and Jas should not have a teenage kid. I never knew there was a fic out there.
Are there any fics with the "Chibi Usa" approach? Bleh... Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Over here, we call her "Sailor Mini-Moon", but I can see what you mean. Little kid sister figure who is actually little kid daughter from the near future comes to help her future parents. Is often a total brat and is openly not impress with said parents as teens/children.
Ok, I realize this is an Aladdin message board, and I can't expect everybody to know everything or use the proper terminology for a fandom just because I'm into it. So, I'll try to be tolerant. Yes, we call her "Mini Moon" here, too, but I knew her as Chibi Moon/Chibi Usa first. I don't much like "Mini Moon" because it sounds like Minnie Mouse. But, "Chibi" is a derogatory term in Japan. (Meaning runt or dwarf, reminding a child in a negative way that they're small.)
But yeah, that's basically what I meant by the "Chibi Usa" approach.

As for Al and Jas, would they say "no" to an adventure if it took them too far away from their children? I'm working on a story where Aladdin is faced with that choice. I'm not saying that Aladdin would do it all the time, but I'm trying to see if Aladdin or Jasmine would put their children first before going on an adventure.
I'd say, yes, they would go on an adventure away from their children, just not often enough to keep them from being parents.

You mean as in Aladdin and Jasmine have a child travel back in time from the future to help them for some reason? Oy, I hope not. That would rank nauseatingly high on the Mary Sue scale.

I don't actually write fics but I draw comics a lot.. I guess they're quite the same..
In one of the strips Jasmine gives birth to a baby boy. Al and Jas decide to show him a whole new world and they go fly around the world on the carpet. When they arrive in India, the parents start fighting over some real stupid thing and the baby falls off the carpet. They can't find him anywhere and fly back to Agrabah. After some time Baghera finds the crying baby and names him Mowgli.
I hope it wasn't too mean.
I drew the comic mainly as a joke.
I can't imagine drawing a comic with Aladdin and Jasmine's children as one of the main characters, talking with everyone and doing his/her own heroic&adventurous stuff etc. I could accept it if Disney created the children but other ways... noo.
But, people can write what they want. I don't even read fics so whatever. I don't wanna know.
