I was watrching Mrs. Doubtfire on YTV last night, and the host of the programming block made a distant reference to aladdin, saying that "Robin Williams has voiced 5 animated characters". _________________ "You know I just realized we're short a doctor and a med student"

It's almost a gamble on mentioning it without wondering if he'll get mad. I was holding my breath when they were giving him his Golden Globe Award a few years ago when they did an entire sequence dedicated to his movies and role of Genie using "Friend Like Me" in the background |

That was when he got his lifetime achievement award at the golden globes of 2005. Does anyone have the video of that montage? _________________ "You know I just realized we're short a doctor and a med student"

Yeah, he gets very... defensive about that for some reason. Even before Katzenburg went back on their deal he was acting like that. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can! After all... you do bear the name of a flower." -- Arbutus |

Genie, Batty Koda in Fern Gully...um...had he done Robots yet? Did Daniel Hillard being the voiceover in the Pudgy cartoons count? *brain is failing to think of who else...will probably slap self in face upon hearing who else* |

I know for a fact he made a slap-in-the-face comment at Katzenburg while accepting his award. I need to check my tape to see what it is exactly....

Now that I am thinking about it, I don't think they mentioned any other animated cartoons he had done other than that. I remember the first half was clips of live-action films and then they came back out of that by singling out his role for Genie by itself because of the award they gave him for it, which caused everyone to burst out into applause. Then after Pierce Brosnan made a "you've never had a friend like him" comment, they did a montage of his films with FLM sequence bits added with the song playing. Then when he was walking up to receive his award, they were playing FLM orchestra style. I am sitting at home going "OhGod, OhGod, OhGod. TooMuchEmphasis, TooMuchEmphasis". Shame it has to come to that |

Really? I thought he' d be pleased that people knew all his characters? Hmm. Maybe he just doesn't like it to be made a big deal cause...he wants to prove he's just an ordinary person, too. Or maybe he's a little insecure? Like asking him, if he was really the one who did Genie, getting defensive, cause maybe he thinks they're going to tell him it was rotten or something? _________________ "I too am a member of your species, Captain, or I was. Nah, I just think it goes back to that deal with Disney not going by his wishes not to blow Genie out of proportion, but they did so anyways. |

^ What she said. He did the project largely because "Ooh, wouldn't it be fun to be in a Disney movie...I could be in something my kids could see!" and ended up feeling that Disney betrayed, exploited, and cheated him.
Heather, I'm curious aboout your remark that he was acting defensive about the project even before the deal was broken...the "There's new info to learn here!" buzzer is going off in my mind, so could you share some more on that? /was too young to understand the details at the time and hasn't heard anything about this before |

Where was that article? Oh, here we go...

Then there was the performer's ambivalence toward all the praise Williams was receiving for his work in "Aladdin." Time and again, people would come up to Robin and tell him his performance in the animated film was his best thing he'd ever done. Initially, Williams enjoyed these compliments -- until he realized that people were saying that his very best work was in a cartoon, a medium that only made use of an actor's voice, not his face. This is the sort of thing that can really start to bug a guy who studied at Juilliard.
Williams' ambivalence toward "Aladdin" became public knowledge in February 1993, when he received a certificate of special achievement for his work in the film at the Golden Globes. As he went up on the stage, the clearly uncomfortable Robin didn't know what to say about this alleged honor. He jokingly asked the celebrities and foreign film critics assembled for the ceremony, "Is this like a coupon I can turn in to get a real award?" |
Although I remembered wrong, this was after the bus shelter ads that were supposedly an accident but before the ads that mentioned his Golden Globe which were what finally pissed him off enough that he said he'd never work for Disney again. _________________ "If only I could believe you. Hey, even the Genie of the Messageboard is allowed to have a little bit of a memory lapse.
Thanks for sharing the article snippet again; hadn't read that one in a really long time so I was feeling shaky on specifics of that whole fallout, too. |

OK, because it was driving me crazy, I looked up all of Robin's voicework on IMDB. If anyone knows of any inaccuracies (b/c I haven't seen all of these and know that IMDB isn't always exactly, you know, right about stuff), do share your insights! (asterisks=theatrical releases)
From most recent...(saving all Aladdin stuff for its own section...)
*2005- "Fender" in Robots
*2001- "Dr. Know" in A.I. Artificial Intelligence (anyone see this? Was this an animatronic character or an animated character?)
1992- "Timekeeper" in the theme park attraction The Timekeeper (Le Visionarium" at DLRP...I feel this has to be the year the Paris version opened because I'm pretty sure that attraction didn't hit WDW until '95...)
*1992- "Batty Koda" in FernGully: The Last Rainforest
1991- "The Kiwi" in a TV...something...called A Wish For Things that Work
1990- Appeared in live action and as the voice of an animated lost boy in the "Back to Neverland" film in the old, good version of The Magic of Disney Animation attraction at MGM
And here are all his credits as Genie:
1992- Aladdin
1995- Aladdin on Ice (TV; uncredited)
"1995," aka 1996- Aladdin and the King of Thieves *kicks the website for that very glaring error*
1997- Great Minds Think for Themselves (it lists this as a TV series, which sort of makes me laugh a little; they list him as "The Genie"...AG, go at it! )
1998- Aladdin's Math Quest (video game, listed as "Blue Genie") |

I haven't seen AI in years; I think it was a talking computer, so I'm not sure which category that would fall under. But it was definitely a voice-only part.
KoT in 1995 - Maybe they originally entered it when the release date was first announced and then never updated it? (I still have ads that came with some of my old Disney tapes that have a 1995 release date for KoT on them...) _________________ "If only I could believe you. Perhaps I can!
