Overview - Episode Guide - Production Notes - Voices
In 1992, Walt Disney Pictures released the animated feature "Aladdin" and it quickly became on of the most successful and popular animated films of all time. With as many tales to tell as there are Arabian Nights, it only seemed natural to bring back Aladdin and his friends for a new series of adventures. Eighty-six thrilling new half-hours of "Disney's Aladdin," were created exclusively for television. So come join Aladdin, Jasmine, and friends in their magical and often hilarious escapeds within and beyond the land of Agrabah.
Aladdin may
still be a little cocky and overconfident, but through the series, he discovers
his strengths as well as his weaknesses, learning the importance of relying
on his friends, instead of trying to always do everything on his own. Most of
all Aladdin still has a lot of growing up to do before he is finally ready to
settle down with the true love of life, Jasmine.
The film may
have been really about Aladdin's adventure but in the series Jasmine is as much
an explorer as he is. Her dream of experiencing the world outside the palace
has come true and she meets every challenge head on. In fact it is often Jasmine
who saves the day. She may be very much in love with Aladdin, but she isn't
just waiting around for him to make things happen.
Genie's dream was freedom in the film and in the series he learns that freedom has its price as well as its rewards. Though he's just as big, just as blue, and just as funny as ever, Genie is no longer the lamp-locked magician we met in the feature film. He's living in the real world now, where problems don't always disappear with the snap of a blue finger. And since his powers are not as reliable as before, Aladdin and friends have to rely on their own sharp wits, and on each other.
Perhaps the greatest character twist in the series concerns the annoying, self-centered, loud-mouth parrot, Iago. His ever-changing loyalties have shifted from Jafar to Aladdin, and the parrot now takes center stage as one of the good guys (most of the time). This unbelievably conceited fowl can surprise even himself when he proves that there is actually a tiny heart of gold concealed under all those feathers. And of course don't forget Abu, the mischievous monkey now has a new partner in trouble, Iago, of course that's when they're not driving each other crazy. And when trouble is near or a quest comes calling, the playful carpet can always be counted upon to transport Aladdin and friends to some new land of enchantment.
So, get ready to be transported to a whole New World of adventure!

During its theatrical release in 1992, Disney's "Aladdin," quickly became one of the most successful and beloved animated films in Hollywood history. But we all know that the story of Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and their friends didn't end with the feature film. So take off on another magic carpet ride with Disney's "Aladdin - the Series", as the world of the Arabian Nights comes alive again.
With as many tales to tell as there are Arabian nights, it seems only natural that Aladdin's action-packed adventures continue in a television series. For television, "Disney's Aladdin," slightly shifts the feature film's focus on music and romance in favour of adventure and action. However, the film's light-hearted, contemporary humour (especially as embodied In the characters of Genie and the obnoxious-but-amusing parrot Iago), its colourful characters, its exotic flavor of wonder and mystery, are all featured, as well as the underlying promise that "A Whole New World" lies in store for Aladdin and Jasmine.
While the film was still in production, Walt Disney Television Animation, tapped long-time Disney animator Tad Stones -- fresh from the success of the hit series "Darkwing Duck" (also airing on Family Channel) to produce the further adventures of Aladdin and his friends for television. Stones spent the next several months with the film's creators and animators, gaining first-hand insights into the "Aladdin" characters and their world.
"Producing 'Disney's Aladdin,' posed a rather wonderful dilemma," reflects Stones. With the eighty-six episodes he finally produced, they had the freedom to take the characters anywhere and develop them in a myriad of ways. The key to creating the highest quality series has been to stay true to the film's rich characters, its sense of magic and wonder, and its visual splendor." The technical challenge of animating 86 half-hour episodes filled with fantastic creatures and distant lands was given to a crack team of the world's best television animators, headed by the Walt Disney Television Animation group in Burbank, and including specially-trained artists at Disney studios in Australia and Japan.
While each frame is carefully hand-drawn by character animators, state of the art computer technology gives the artists the ability to visualize more possibilities. "Our background colorists can experiment with subtle shading -- with the touch of a computer keyboard, the streets of Agrabah can change from daylight to dusk," explains Stones. "Or, as Aladdin and Jasmine fly toward the palace on Carpet, we can try new angles and perspectives, revealing the city as it's never been seen before."
The characters, as well, have developed in greater depth. "As we developed the storylines for the series, we continually asked ourselves: Is this something this character would do?" Stones emphasizes. "We dissected every scene in the film to make sure that our stories built on the character traits that were introduced in the original feature."
"Being true to himself is all-important to Aladdin," reflects Scott Weinger, who created the title voice for the film and returns for the television series. "He and Jasmine both have a lot of living to do before they're experienced enough to marry and settle down. Throughout the TV series, Aladdin battles not only evil villains, but his own tendency to be cocky and overconfident. He discovers his strengths as well as his weaknesses, and he learns to rely on his friends for help, instead of trying to bluster his way through every scrape on his own."
In fact, it's often Jasmine who saves the day. "Jasmine has her own very real power," says Stones, himself the proud father of a feisty young daughter. "She's very much in love with Aladdin, but isn't just waiting around for him to make things happen for her."
"That's the best thing about 'Disney's Aladdin' for me," says Linda Larkin, who reprises her role as the spirited princess for the TV series. "The film was really Aladdin's adventure, but in the series, Jasmine is as much an explorer as he is. Her dream of experiencing the world outside the palace comes true -- and she meets every challenge head on. I know from the letters I receive that Princess Jasmine is a role model for a lot of little girls, and watching her in the TV series is going to give them confidence. I'm very proud of that."
"Disney's Aladdin' Is a chance for viewers to see their favorite characters on the other side of the happy ending," says Stones. "It's about Living your dreams -- not just dreaming them."
Genie's dream was freedom -- but freedom has its price as well as its rewards. Though he's just as big, just as blue, and just as hilarious as ever, Genie (voiced by Dan Castelleneta) is no longer the lamp-locked magician we met in the feature film. He's living in the real world now, where problems don't always disappear with the snap of a blue finger. Now that Genie Is the possessor of mere semi-phenomenal, nearly cosmic powers, Aladdin and Jasmine know they can't depend totally on their friends to rescue them from their enemies. More than ever, they have to rely on their own sharp wits -- and on each other.
Perhaps the most intriguing character twist in the series concerns the annoying, self- centered, loud-mouth parrot, Iago (voiced by his original alter ego, comedian Gilbert Gottfried). True to his own principles -- mainly me, myself and I-- Iago's ever- changing loyalties have shifted from Jafar to Aladdin, and the parrot now takes center stage as one of the good guys (most of the time). The unredeemably conceited fowl surprises even himself when he occasionally exhibits a tiny heart of gold concealed in his feathered breast.
Joining the gang is the mischievous monkey, Abu, and the rugs-to-riches, hall-to-hall Carpet. Though still devoted to Aladdin, Abu has become Iago's partner-in-mischief, and when they're not making each other crazy, they're causing trouble for the rest of Agrabah. And the playful carpet is always underfoot to transport Aladdin and Jasmine to new lands of enchantment.
In their daily adventures, Aladdin, Jasmine and the gang find themselves constantly struggling to stay one Jump ahead of the delightfully dreadful pack of thieves, beasts, spirits and wizards. Among the evil-doers (voiced by an impressive cast of guest-stars) are shape-shifters, slinky feline demons, spirits who possess the awesome powers of water and earth, and an escapee from a compost pile (a human- looking bad guy who's really a plant). And -- just when you thought It was safe to go back to the desert -- The Great Sand Shark surfaces in a feeding frenzy. Even with a Genie, a parrot, a kleptomaniac monkey and a magic carpet on their side, Aladdin and Jasmine can never let down their guard.
Surrounded in his office by shelves brimming with Aladdin character models, Stones readily acknowledges that bringing one of the most successful animated films ever made to television is not without its responsibilities. "Although Aladdin, Jasmine and their friends are relatively new to the Disney family, they've become some of the most beloved characters of all time. There's always that feeling at the end of a great film that leaves you wanting to know what happens next. With "Aladdin - the Series", fans can tune in and find out. We even travel back in time to find out things like how Aladdin first met Abu, and why the loyal monkey is an incurable thief." "Voicing the series gives the cast a chance to be together again and keep the fun going," adds Scott Weinger. "I know viewers will feel the same way, too."
