Remember how we discussed the origin of fairy tales and how disturbing they were? (Sleeping Beauty gets raped, etc) I can't find the thread now, but I remember that someone posted a link to a site that had information about that. Does anyone happen to remember that site? Much obliged ^_^

Woa, WHAT? I have all of the original Grimm's fairy tales (and yes, they ARE unedited), and it doesn't say ANYTHING about Sleeping Beauty getting raped. What whacked-out version are you talking about?

I think there's a version even before the Grimm fairy tales where she does get raped, but she was dead to top it off Laughing

Do you still want the link to the story, APK?

Raped, as in the prince discovered her while she was asleep, fell madly in love/lust with her, made oo-ooh with her, and got her pregnant. She later gives birth to twins, one of whom attempts to suck on her finger, which dislodges the piece of wood from the spindle. Then she wakes up. And more stuff happens.

I think it was supposed to be romantic, but when you get down to it, it was pretty much rape.

And speaking of the Brothers Grimm, even their stories were mild in comparison to even older variations of the tales they wrote down. Check out this website for more grisly, gruesome fairytale fun!

A 'rape version' of the story can be found here.

Ok, I've done research about why fairytales are so grimm. It was a way of telling children the battle between good and evil and the consequences that these characters faced. It's some kind of a form of melodrama because you know who's bad and know who's good.
It gave a lesson to learn from. Some ppl say it's way to make kids behave by telling them these stories. In cinderella, we all know that she married royalty but we don't know the prices that the stepmom paid for being so mean. I've read that the stepmom got her eyes removed by blackbirds.
Over centuries, the story has been twisted and changed into the story that is not so gory or grimm into what we all know.

G.K. Chesterton said that "Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten."

Riiiiight, Syera Quixote.

It was more or less supporting what Mariposa said and monsters aren't always in the form of dragons or trolls.

Yeah, yeah, you're just jealous... because unlike you guys, I actually HAVE a windmill in my backyard to attack!

(Yeah, I know what y'all meant. I was teasing. Very Happy)

True, but Old School fairytales, Grimms Stories, or Nursery Rhymes were told as bed time stories to teach kids lessons and morals ( whatever what's considered to be moral in that era). Its the use of melodrama, to make the antagonists character obvious on who is bad. You're right they might disguise them as dragons, trolls and witches. Sometimes character profiling could sometimes send out the wrong idea. For example, my godson asks if all step mothers are evil. Not all step mothers are evil. I think I know the reason why they are portrayed to be evil. Maybe because they are the second wife of their husband who had children from a previous marriage. Jealousy could be the issue bc the first wife was the first love and the child could be the make of that first love. So it gives the excuse for the second wife to treat the child rudely and mean because they are not their own. That or the author was going through some childhood issues.

truthfully, that isn't the case for all step mothers.

Yeah. My oldest sister is having that same problem with Skyler. She loves Skylar, but she's worried that she won't love her the same way and it's harder because her birth mother is still a part of her life.
