Before Rapunzel returns to the screen in the new Disney Channel series Tangled: The Series, she’ll first star in a TV movie that will re-introduce the kingdom to her band of characters. Tangled: Before Ever After is a bona fide Disney Channel Original Movie, and it marks the first time an animated DCOM will launch a series on the network. |
Looks like it's Rapunzel's equivalent of "Return of Jafar," although they're actually calling it what it is: a pilot movie. And I'm PUMPED that it's in 2D _________________

Oh? Care to elaborate? (Are you watching it with your daughter or are you having some mommy's cartoon time? )
(I've been fantasizing recently about what if they updated the Aladdin series, and I make myself foam at the mouth thinking of all the incredible subjects and mythology and themes it could touch upon with the right team [me, I wanna be on the team ]) |

The animation is really beautiful and actually won some awards. The music is unnecessarily good, and the songs are written by Alan Menken. The whole voice cast is original, and the new actors & singers they got are great!
Actually James Monroe Iglehart plays one of the new main characters
I think both Tangled and Aladdin's shows share the strength of having a great smattering of really creative places and characters, but Tangled really uses those characters. Most characters pop up multiple times and in a really significant way. There are MANY character-related twists, where protagonists become antagonists, some characters are revealed to be XYZ all along, some characters you don't know whether you can trust them, etc.
I think Tangled keeps the characters more consistent than Aladdin does too. There is one episode that centers around Eugene's hero complex, and his arc comparable to Getting the Bugs Out
There is a very clear through-line. Every season has a distinct goal. Although each episode has its own conflict, it still somehow relates to the overall arc and/or to character development. There are no glaring continuity errors, and there are many references to quotes and events in the original film.
Characters' pasts are very explicitly addressed. This is mostly a good thing, but in the case of Flynn/Eugene, I kind of preferred not knowing who his parents were. Without getting too spoiler-y, they kinda pull a KoT where it turns out his parents were pretty significant people. Minor gripe. _________________
